Local Dive Resources

Details of many local shipwrecks can be found at:

http://www.aquaexplorers.com/shipwrecks_NY_NJ.htm.

Capt. Dan Berg is most enthusiastic about the history of our local waters and has spent years putting together useful information.  Check out the 3-D images he and artist Aaron Hirsh have been cooking up recently.

A great organization created by and for the local dive community is The Long Island Dive Association: www.lidaonline.com

Books

Here are some books you may want to read for historical information, technique as well as contemporary dive tales:

Lost Voyages: Two Centuries of Shipwrecks in the Approaches to New York by Bradley Sheard.

Full of photos and illustrations of the wrecks we dive every weekend:

Primary Wreck-Diving Guide by Gary Gentile.

A good basic guide from one of the most respected divers around:

Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson.

A “must read” for all divers who appreciate the historical significance of shipwrecks as well as a gripping tale of diving to the limits.  This book is without a doubt the finest narrative written on the subject of shipwreck diving. (I can’t wait for the Movie!)

Iron Coffins by Herbert A. Werner.

Nothing else brings the chilling tale of life on a German U-Boat to you with such spectacular detail and vision.

Long Island Shore Diver: A Diver's Guide to Long Island's Beach Dives by Dan Berg.

Shore diving is alive and well here in NYC. Who would have thunk it?
